Introduction to Moleskin and its Uses in The Medical Fields

If you have never heard of moleskin, one thing can be probably certain that you are not a backpacking, hiking type. It may sound a bit disgusting and bring to mind images of dead moles. However, in reality when somebody talks about moleskin they more than likely refer to the fabric known as moleskin. It is a soft, windproof and sturdy cotton twill fabric which originated in England. It is used for multiple purposes such as notebook covers made from moleskin that were used by travelling authors and as a first-aid bandage especially for blisters.

The way this fabric is woven makes it very comfortable, warm and durable. It is used to make high-end outer wear. In addition to the traditional cotton moleskin, polyester moleskin is also being used now. The lighter type of moleskin is often used in everyday work clothing and it has also been used to make military uniforms. Farmers and laborers in England wore pants made of moleskin to protect themselves from harsh weather and because such clothing is very comfortable. The heavier type is generally used as lining for outdoor clothing which makes it perfect for severe cold and windy weather.

It is best known for its use in preventing and treating blisters and is an essential part of a backpacker or hikers first-Aid Kit. Moleskin bandages come with an adhesive on one side. The soft side of the fabric cushions the blister to keep it from rubbing against anything. Hikers and backpackers, who spend a considerable amount of time outdoors on their feet, consider moleskin to be an indispensable part of their gear. Even a small blister can ruin an exciting hiking trip by restricting the movements of the hiker. Friction blisters are caused by irritation in skin from rubbing against a surface like shoes in the case of hikers. If the blister is filled with clear fluid then there isn’t any need for concern but if there is pus in the blister, it means that there may be an infection. In this case, proper treatment and medication may be needed.

Since prevention is always better than cure, try these tips to prevent blisters from occurring:

- Shoes play a pivotal role in the formation of blisters; therefore, always wear comfortable shoes that are not too tight or loose

- If you spend a lot of time on your feet, it may be beneficial to wear special socks to minimize friction

- Use special products for prevention of blisters such as blister protection patches or silicon sheets

- Keep the feet dry and avoid wearing wet footwear.
