Grab their attention

You’re probably going to read this.
It’s a short paragraph at the top of the page. It’s surrounded by white space. It’s in small type.
To really get attention, you should write like this:
- Bulleted list
- Occasional use of bold to prevent skimming
-
Short sentence fragments
-
Explanatory subheads
- No puns
- And don’t forget lists?
This is based on Jakob Nielsen’s theory. Jakob is a usability expert who writes an influential biweekly column on such topics as eye-tracking research, Web design errors, and banner blindness.
Wow what on earth is that all about
Well eye-tracking is the process of measuring either the point of gaze (“where we are looking”) or the motion of an eye relative to the head.
Web design errors are obvious.
And banner blindness is a a phrase in web usability where visitors on a website ignore banner-like information
What research can tell you
What Jakob’s research shows is that visitors to your website / blog look at information in particular ways.
- In general they look and focus on the top left center section of the information – may sound obvious as in western languages we tend to read left to right so they start at the begining.
- People tend to ignore the right hand colum – often where you see promotions, banners etc. and increasingly menus.
- They loose ‘focus’ the longer the text.
Keep paragraphs and sentences short. They are easy to read.
Use links as they give a text more authority, making people more likely to stick around.

Internal blog links

COMMENTS
When blogging, internal blog links – that is links between your posts – are important. Being able to link related content to each other helps readers and search engines alike therefore great for SEO – but creating all those links can be time consuming and often confusing. Here is a simple WordPress function I wrote that uses the WordPress add-action() hook function to create automatic links for category names in the content of posts.
To implement copy the function and past into your WordPress function file. That way every time you mention a category name in the text of a post a link will be created to the category archive, therefore related posts.
Hope this is helpful
-
function tag_post_display($content) {
-
-
global $wpdb;
-
-
$content_new = $content;
-
-
$tag_result = $wpdb->get_results("SELECT * FROM ".$wpdb->prefix."term_taxonomy
-
LEFT JOIN ".$wpdb->prefix."terms ON ".$wpdb->prefix."terms.term_id = ".$wpdb->prefix."term_taxonomy.term_id
-
WHERE ".$wpdb->prefix."term_taxonomy.taxonomy=’category’");
-
-
foreach ($tag_result as $tag_result) :
-
-
$content_new = str_replace($tag_result->name,‘<a href="’.get_option(‘home’).‘/category/’.$tag_result->slug.‘">’.$tag_result->name.‘</a>’,$content_new);
-
-
endforeach;
-
-
return $content_new;
-
-
}
-
-
add_action(‘the_content’, ‘tag_post_display’, 9);
-
Obviously this WordPress function could be extended in numbers of ways nor just category names but also keywords, tags and much more.

5 Blogging Tips Not to Be Ignored
Sunday 20th December 2009 by admin0
COMMENTS
Whether you blog for personal or professional reasons there are certain blogging tips you should not ignore. When you consider your primary concern is to satisfy the blog reader there are particular fundamentals you will want to pay close attention to.
Using a blog platform for marketing on the internet is not all that different than using it for personal reasons since in both cases you want to attract traffic. In fact the amount of blog traffic you attract and retain is a good barometer as to how successful the blog really is. It is therefore important that you establish certain ‘habits’ early on when blogging to make your site more appealing.
Here are 5 steadfast rules you should hold yourself to in order to attract and keep the blog traffic you will need if you want your site to make an impact.
Break Up Your Posts
When posting minimize the size of your paragraphs and sentences where you can. Large ‘blocks’ of text can be intimidating to your readers. In addition having too many sentences strung together can be very straining on the readers eyes. Learning to save more by using fewer words will save you effort and be appreciated by your readers.
Edit Your Work and Check Your Spelling
This only makes sense especially if you are going to take the effort to compose anything. It is easy to run your content through a spell check which is basic software on just about any computer. Also by just taking a few ‘moments’ to reread your work you may uncover sentences that just do not sound right and require a minor adjustment.
If you are going to put your name on anything you want to be sure it represents you in a positive light and not riddled with spelling errors.
Maintain a Regular Posting Schedule
Some people may not have the time or content to post as frequently as others and that is ok as long as you keep to a predictable schedule. You want to do this so the blog reader knows what top expect from you. If your posting habits are erratic many will become frustrated and not even bother to check back for new updates.
Keep Headlines Consistent with the Content
Always be sure your headlines reflect the content of your post. Misleading readers will only serve to confuse, frustrate and drive them away. Readers want to know that they can scan a headline and it will be an accurate ‘preview’ of what they can expect from the content.
Post Date and ‘Sign’ Your Post
As unimportant as this may seem to you the blog reader likes to know who the author is and how ‘fresh’ the post is. Dating your post also allows readers to determine how old the blog is. Most blogging programs are set up to display the date and author of any post so always select this option.
The blogging tips we discussed above focus on certain habits that you should develop to better cater to any blog reader. Whether you use your blog platform for marketing on the internet or for personal reasons your success will be determined by your ability to attract and satisfy visitors to your site. The tips we covered here today are the core essentials you will need to supply in order for any degree of success to be yours.

3 Ways to Maintain Fresh Quality Content
Sunday 29th November 2009 by admin0
COMMENTSQuality content is the heart and soul of any blog that is on the internet whether its purpose is for marketing or not. Having and dispensing useful information is the key to attracting traffic to your site. Just as important is maintaining a constant flow of fresh quality information in order to keep the traffic coming back. Therefore it is important for any blog with aspirations of future growth to establish some type of content development strategy.
Whether you are driving traffic to your site with promotional content or perhaps rely upon attracting search engine traffic the need for a continuous flow of good information exists.
Let’s have a look at 3 ways that you can in which you can ’source’ out fresh content that can be used in any way you see fit for your blog.
Brainstorm
Ask yourself what is it that ‘I’ want or need to know more about. As you know there is always something new to be learned and as I go through the process I gather my research material. Once I have learned what it is I was researching I share it with others by writing about it.
Another ‘angle’ to use here would be to also share the ‘mindset’ you may be experiencing such as confusion, discouragement, frustration or elation. All these feelings come into play when operating an online business therefore they are worth writing about. Explain how you mange these situations or perhaps how to avoid them in the future. Insights are what people often look for and learn from so share yours in the form of content you use for your business.
I use these approaches quite often when composing either posts or articles for distribution.
Go Out into Your Niche
Go out into your blog community and visits other sites that have themes related to yours. Listen in on and become part of the discussions at these sites. Contribute when you have something of value to share but learn to also ‘actively’ listen in order to pick up on new ideas or the insights of others. Learning is a two way street here where others can also serve you by sharing their insights.
You can just imagine how much these visits can contribute to the content development of your own blog or promotional materials you distribute for traffic generation.
This serves a twofold purpose insofar as you not only pick up new information to write about but you can also ’spread the word’ about your sites
Invite Guest Bloggers
By maintaining a steady flow of quality information on your site you WILL get noticed. At this point it can be also expected that you will have offers/requests for others to place a post on your blog. Take this offer ONLY after verifying the level of content this blogger produces for their own site.
By introducing new ‘blood’ into your blog you are most likely offering a new perspective and tone which your readers will enjoy.
Providing quality content for your blog is of primary importance for your site to grow and prosper. Maintaining a steady stream of useful information is what attracts readers to your site. However genuine quality information is also needed for promotional purposes as well as site content therefore some type of content development strategy is needed. The 3 techniques we reviewed above can easily create a steady stream of good information that can be used for either your blog itself or to be circulated around to generate traffic. In the end whether you are driving traffic to your site with promotional materials or attracting search engine traffic it is best to have a strategy that helps supply the content you need.
