Real Life Super Heroes: Superman

The real life Superman would not be able to fly, run at supersonic speeds, chill drinks with his frosty breath, bounce bullets off his chest, or shoot lasers from his eyes. In truth a real life superhero version of Superman would me more akin to the super soldier serum enhanced Marvel Comics Icon Captain America.

Building a Superman

Rather than working with a one time treatment involving vitaray exposure and viral infections to cause spontaneous mutation, we would look to gene therapy and trying to find a way to increase the muscular performance of the body while also decreasing recovery times and cell regeneration.  We would also look to find ways to biologically or mechanically enhance vision, hearing, and other vital senses.  The easiest way would be to go with external mechanics attached to parts of the costume.

Powers of a Real Life Superman

A real life superhero version of Superman would not be able to deflect bullets, survive a nuclear explosion,  or leap tall buildings in a single bound. He would, however be able to run a 2.5 minute mile and easily Bench Press 2.5 to 3.5 his body weight.

He would also give the general populace the impression of having superscience based powers through use of technology and illusion. 

Costuming a Superman

Since our Superman can not fly it does not make since for him to have an elaborate costume or a cape. In reality he would proably work as a fire fighter, soldier, or police officer. If garbed as a civilian super hero he would wear kevlar armor to deflect errant projectile fire and carry riot gear type weaponry.

As alluded to earlier in the piece, mechanical enhancements would probably be needed to increase the sensorial abilities of our Superman.  The enhancements would be hidden as costume accents.

Conclusion:

While it is really fun to imagine an all powerful being that can literally do anything, there is only so much that a real person would be able to do. Our Superman would be super in every sense of the word physically, but her would fall far short of anything seen in the comics.
