6 Digit Counter Circuit Help?

I am in the process of building a coil winder and I need to build a circuit to accurately count the turns on the bobbin. I have a basic understanding of circuits, but not enough to be able to design something like this on my own.

A cheaper alternative which you don’t need to program can be made out of 74 series logic. For each of the six stages you need a 74192 Decade up/down counter, a 7447 BCD to 7 segment decoder chip and a 7 segment LED display module. The counter can be clocked by microswitches on the bobbin or similar sensor (e.g. led/sensor module using a shutter, Hall effect device and magnet, rotary switch with the detent removed etc.) and if you use multiple sensors has the advantage of being able to count up or down whether the bobbin is being wound forwards or backwards using a bistable latch to choose between up and down counts.
Successive stages are cascaded together by connecting the carry/borrow outputs into the up/down inputs. If you shop around you should be able to get the components for around less than $5 a counter stage plus the latch/sensor circuitry.
Counter kits are available but tend to be only 4 stages and they’re not always easy to cascade not to mention they don’t really give any component cost per stage advantage.
